Startup Troubleshooting Help

Description Hold down these keys during boot Comments
Boot from a CD C Boot from the Install CD to run Rest Password Utility, Disk Utility
Boot into Mac  OS X X Boot a machine previously booted to 9
Boot into Single User Mode Command Key + S If Mac OS X hangs by the time init launches loginwindow booting into single user mode may be your only option for fixing the problem.
Safe Boot Shift Key after POST chime If a previously installed program hangs the system during the bootup process this can get you through
Safe Login Shift Key after login authentication Prevents a user’s login items from opening at login time
Use the boot manager Option Key after POST chime Will show valid bootable partitions
Boot into FireWire target disk mode T Get the floating FireWire symbol and use your machine as an external hard disk
Boot from any bootable volume other than the internal hard disk Command Key + Option Key+Shift Key + Backspace Key (Delete) If you have a valid system installed on an external drive you can use this to boot to it
Boot into open firmware Command Key + Option Key+ O + F
reset-nvram Resets the contents of non volatile memory in firmware.  You may need to reset the startup disk or date and time after this is cleared
reset-all Reboots the machine from open firmware
